Many species such as Toucans, Motmots, Manakins and Cotingas are endemic to the Neotropics. Costa Rica boasts an avifauna of more than 880 species. The most diverse avifauna are those of the wet lowlands and the foothill forests. The three OTS stations are all hotspots for bird communities and have hosted many of the world’s most important scientific studies on tropical birds.

Palo Verde Biological Station located in the heart of Palo Verde National Park, in the plains of the northwest Pacific. The park is known for its dry deciduous forests, its lakes and wetlands. Las Cruces Biological Station and Wilson Botanical Garden in the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica, a site is admired for its extensive collection of palms, bromeliads and plants endémicas.Las Cruces is part of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve.
